Antonio Joao Gandra D’Almeida, MD is a high-level medical executive and Career Military Officer specializing in Disaster Medicine and Emergency Surgical Care. Recognized for an operational, “boots-on-the- ground” leadership style, he was appointed in 2024 to lead the Portuguese National Health Service (SNS) during a pivotal period of structural reorganization. His career is defined by dual expertise in large-scale medical logistics and clinical surgical practice within high-pressure environments. As a Regional Director (North) (2021 – January 2024) he managed the pre-hospital emergency medical response for Northern Portugal, overseeing the Emergency Dispatch Centers (CODU), VMER units, and helicopter emergency services. His role as a Lieutenant Coronel of the Portuguese Army has gained him extensive experience in international disaster management and medical aide in his multiple deployments in humanitarian missions. He has been author of numerous publications and has received several recognitions and awards. His also serves as WFICC Ambassador includes leading the critically ill transportation guidelines and protocols
